It's cliquism, the old guard that created the good stuff quits, in come the newcomers that have rotted their brain from tumblr and college humanities education. Those types both have a near religious belief in their ideals (who could be against trans people in media other than inherently evil people?) and are very insecure and have fixated their identity around the media they consume because it let's them divorce themselves mentally from their flawed, pathetic selves in the real life.
Stuff like your image or pic rel isn't meant to appeal to anyone, it's supposed to A) be a self-insert for some low human writer and B) publicly affirm that you're in the know and part of the clique.
