There are millions of American who have never had pizza outside of massive chains (Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, etc.)
As soon as you leave the major coast cities the quality of pizza drops tremendously. I've been to some local places in the midwest that were truly grim.

I had pizza in rural Arkansas once and legit returned after thinking they accidentally served my a rotten pizza that was left out on accident or something. They made me another in front of my and it legit tasted like the cheese was both vomit and melted plastic. I felt bad complaining because the staff were nice but it was inedible. Everyone there seemed to love it.

maybe I just hit the tourist places and didnt get the (((good))) stuff but the pizza that i tried in naples honestly wasnt all that special. I got margherita every place that I tried and honestly the closest thing I can compare it to would be the personal pan pizzas served in my old university cafeteria (which were known to be very good to be fair) with less cheese

I had some veal pasta dish at a restaurant called campiello and it was phenomenal though
