the ornate details of carved stone in buildings became unpopular, because poor people were buying plaster that looked identical. My poor grandparent's house has all sorts of "fancy" furniture and moldings, made out of plastic and plaster.
The way the elites distinguished themselves was to use custom glass and steel; with novel engineering and fabrication processes that no one else could afford. Of course, you can buy it for a bargain at Home Depot today, so it is ubiquitous and low status now.
Architects have basically run out of new ideas; and are focusing on sucking-off 'heritage sites" now. Which is probably why remodels always try to make the building look like it's from an older era.
