>>212420700>It's the safest city in the country if you exclude non-cities like Irvine or Gilbert. When you sort by murder rate, Austin, San Diego, and Honolulu all beat it, which I consider real cities. Crime rates also don't necessarily reflect the reality of being in public every day. Take public transit in NYC and then do it in Tokyo and tell me with a straight face Tokyo isn't a million times nicer.
>You can't be serious.Okay culturally maybe I misspoke. Obviously NYC is more culturally relevant than SG and probably HK as well. Tokyo has current day NYC beat by a landslide though. But generally, NYC really isn't all that culturally relevant anymore. I can name a single obscure musical artist I like from NYC, while I can name like 10 artists I'm obsessed with from Britain or California off the top of my head. NYC doesn't make movies/TV shows, comics, broadway hasn't been relevant since forever. I guess a lot of comedians come from NY. It's not nothing, but nobody gets obsessed with NY like people get obsessed with Japan or China or even Korea.
Technologically, NY is not really a leader. The bay area generally has the mid atlantic beat, as does new england. Colombia/NYU are still great universities and produce good tech/research, but there are numerous other regions of the country that are just as good or better for research/startups/innovation.
The best opportunities/culture are mostly elsewhere. If you have enough of your parents' money to keep you going in NYC and you like the lifestyle enough, then good for you, but I still can't shake the feeling that's not really real place.
>>212421821See the first part of this post. It's also a quality of life thing. And do the math. If I commute twice a day for 5 years, 5 days a week, then the probability that I never have to deal with any bullshit is exceedingly low. Wanting the people you share public transit with to be respectful is not wimpy or entitled, you're just battered and demoralized.
