Probably the most overrated thing I've ever watched. The fights with angels are cool but you can tell they were making up the entire plot as they went along. The storyline is actually nonsense but it masquerades as being deep and people slop it up because the fights are cool

uh no, the number 17 is pretty important in judaism, the angels was just a sideshow, and the actual story is hidden meaningfully
the story is centered around the alien species first ancestral race and how each planet is only suppose to be either a race of adamites or a race of lilimites, so they don't gain too much power, seed of life and seed of knowledge
but unfortunately earth got both and it is the adamites trying to retake their promised paradise back from the lilim....and that is the back story
the real conflict is ofc shinji growing up and accepting that his father is an asshole and gendou accepting the fact that yui would be very displeased with his treatment of shinji
