What do you look for in a group?
I'm shit out of the loop, since I only play with people I know IRL, and I've never played newer versions of DnD, I've only really played Pathfinder 1e. So I've no idea how the average redditor is to play with.

DnD players are almost all soy'ed out freaks like this, ESPECIALLY if you're playing online. Everyone is gonna make some LGBT character or a cutesy joke character or try to be extremely meta. Just go hang out at card shops or lan cafe's in your city to meet autistic nerdy dudes and start a DnD group.

I mean you do have to give a shit about the plot, otherwise the DM will feel their prep is for nothing.
But I get ya, jokes at the table and a bit of banter is important.

But it does sound artificial when people pat you on the back for doing every little thing. Personally I like playing with people where we're all kinda just dragged into it, and doing shit because we're either hired to do it, or because no one else will. I hate taking the role of the "hero", if that makes sense. It just feels weird getting praise for defending yourself.

I had the same experience OP. I turned up to dungeons and dragons and they were absolutely people I knew wouldn't get along with.
