Why is it that in many East Asian languages, a full name is only limited to three syllables? How did this development come about?

Chinese characters are one syllable, and at some point they developed the custom of one-syllable surnames and two-character given names.

Nah, English has way more distinct syllables than Mandarin, it's not about that.

Because you actually have names in your own language instead of adopting Chinese names like the Vietnamese and Koreans. (Well, native Korean names are making a comeback apparently.)
