But mostly it's just too much stress in the first world. The conditions for having children suck. Too much work to do because everything is harder to afford, which means less time to meet anyone and facilitate a relationship and if you have one you need even more money, and then if you want a kid you need even more money all of which costs more time which you need to raise kids. Community dies with cities which is where everyone goes to get work, which means trust erodes, which erodes social structures, which means nobody has any reason to leave their house anymore and after 50+ years of being told about every murder in the area every day people feel less safe outside. The fewer people you trust and see means fewer avenues to find a partner, again means less coupling.
Ask yourself why you're not having kids currently and you'll see. Either you have no one, or they don't want kids, or you're not in a good enough place to afford it. I want kids but just finding a reliable home is a fucking nightmare nevermind the time or funds. Plus kids used to cost very little, now each one is a financial responsibility. You can't have 10 kids unless you're a millionaire, it's impossible, CPS would take them away.

people talk about expenses, but social media are infinitely worse. its a parallal system of existence, a form of containment, that keeps you in feedback loops. if it was 1985 and you had no internet you would've ventured into your community, formed career-boosting connections, chatted up every lady you could find and firmly established yourself by your early twenties.

Used to be that a single income could afford housing and food to feed an entire family. Now people can barely afford to house and feed themselves.
