I think hypergamy is probably a factor but I've shifted my opinion on how much recently.
I think men suffer more intensely from factors that decrease attractiveness in an absolute sense than women.
Balding is much rarer in women, men start losing masculine charm at lower bodyfat percentages than women do with feminine charm. Beyond what can be photographed weakness (Physically, mentally, monetarily) detracts from male attractiveness more than it does in women.

Particularly in modernity men might actually be less attractive than women.
