Sudtiroleans don't even care, they're pretty insular people and only their heimat matters to them. They don't interact much either with Italians or Austrians. It's just Italians are weirdly obsessed about them, probably because they're the only big non-Italian group within their country, Italians are not used to diversity.

Sütirol is culturally Germanophone and geographically Italian
Ticino is both culturally and geographically Italian, yet it's Swiss
etc. etc.

it's all basically random and decided by silly things like wars in the past
it would be madness to rewrite all the borders in Europe since every country has a "greater" version that comprises all the bordering regions around it and that would cause endless disputes

it's much wiser to keep things as they are and remove the limitations with e.g. Schengen and integrate the countries as much as possible
incidentally that's also why the war over Eastern Ukraine is completely nuts, as it's just another case of this generic European problem
