It makes sense historically. Journeying to foreign lands used to be a very long and life-changing commitment and often people would have to stay so long they'd assimilate and go a bit native.

Not really. Many explorers went native or did stuff their peers back home would totally be aghast at, some took of wives or concubines. Many European empires had pretty very strict interaction laws and etiquette on how one "should" interact with the natives. Going native was a fear of many administrations.
