Nice relatively intact Victorian centre, but the economy is bad, it hasn't really recovered from deindustrialisation as much as Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham. Good metro from the 80s. Coal was the traditional industry. The new castle was built by William II (?). Hadrian's Wall also starts in Newcastle theoretically, but it is pretty much gone outside of the Pennines. The football club has a black and white striped jersey and the mascot is a magpie. St. James Stadium (?). There's a ruined abbey (?) on the coast at the mouth of the Tyne, and a statue to Admiral Collingwood, who was from the area. There's a ferry to Nijmegen (?). There's a statue of Earl Grey in the main square. There was the Jarrow march in the 30s, or 20s, or whatever.

South Shields is the bad neighbourhood. Weird accent. A lot of offshore wind farms? Badly kept terraces, a lot are subdivided between the two floors. GREGS.
