James II was intolerably cruel and tyrannical, and levied heavy enough taxes to piss off certain members of parliament beyond redemption. Then those MPs were able to rally the commoners over the possibility that James would pass the crown off to continental Catholics.
It was a question of like aristocracy versus meritocracy, whether it was better to be led by incompetent royals of noble blood or highly skilled ordinary gentlemen, with shades of the continent versus england conflict.

Then the civil war was basically the north telling the south look, you're acting like we're on equal footing here, but we don't have to listen to you, you are weak and unstable as shit.
