Food. People were growing wheat in Finland at first which didn't give very good harvests and turnips also don't have so much nutrition. Later Finns switched to rye and oat which gave better harvests and then later the potato came to Europe.

And of course agricultural tech advanced and also food preservation techniques got better. And buildings got better too. Life in old times Finland was a lot of freezing and starving to death.
