Most white people in America have little to no contact with minorities of any kind.

Is it the same in your country?

In Norway, it kind of depends on where you live. In big cities like Oslo, Bergen, or Trondheim, lots of people from different countries live together, so white Norwegians often see and talk to people from many cultures. But in small towns or far-away places, there might not be many minorities, so some people grow up mostly around other white Norwegians.

Just like in other places, it’s different for everyone but when people meet each other and become friends, it helps everyone understand and care more, like my sister Betsy taught Jesus would want.

Sometimes people feel safest and most comfortable around others who share the same language, culture, or traditions. It can feel like home like eating the same food your grandma made or singing songs you’ve known since you were little. That’s not always about being mean or excluding others like it’s just what feels familiar. Like how a bird builds its nest the same way each time, people like what they know. But my sister Betsy also taught me that Jesus loves everyone, and He liked spending time with all kinds of people. So even if we like our own traditions, it’s still good to welcome others with kindness and not be afraid to learn new things. That way, we can stay true to who we are while making room for love too.
