Obviously they could get lucky and get a friendly dictator like they got in Saudi Arabia but that is rarer and they serve for life. People gets to believe the power is really centralized in a politician under blackmail they switch periodically, remains confused and never get to realize the real people they need to overthrow for change are the donors, or the oligarchy that owns the meanigful institutions and manages them (advertisement, the press, ngos, logistics, the media, real state, academia, bureucracy, the central intelligence, Tech, etc)

Direct democracy is an option. Constant referendums on whatever like they have in Switzerland. Fairly easy to vet etc. Obviously peoples opinions can still be influenced through propaganda but it's still a lot more open ended than representative democracy.
