When did the decline of Japanese electronics and technologies begin?

20 years ago, companies like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp, Sanyo, Seiko Epson, Casio, Hitachi, Olympus, Seiko, Sharp, NEC, Yamaha etc dominated the electronics industry but today they are a mere shell of what they used to be like

>refrigerators, washmachines, vacuums, batteries, and air conditioners
>Laundry machines, including washer-dryers
>lithium-ion and flash memory your phone uses were created by Japanese
>Hitachi Building Systems is the second largest manufacturer of elevators in Japan
>DSLR cameras
>LCD
>LED blue light
>fiber optic communications
>the first bullet train (Shinkansen)
>CD was created by Sony based on PCM sound source
>Video Home System (VHS), which preceded the DVD, was invented by Victor Company of Japan
>DVD
>Sony Trinitron
>Sony Walkman and Xperia
>HD-DVD discs by Toshiba
>Blu-Ray discs by Sony
>Flash memory - created by Japan
>J-SH04 – the world's first camera phone capable of sending picture messages
>NEC were the Japanese IBM. PC-88 and PC-98
>Japan DOMINATES the video game industry to this day
>Nintendo (Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka, Eiji Aonuma, Satoru Iwata, Yuji Horii, etc)
>SEGA GENESIS, SEGA SATURN (Hideki Sato, Sega and Hitachi), SEGA DREAMCAST (Hideki Sato and Hitachi) with Order Independent Transparency
>Sony PlayStation and Ken Kutaragi

2000's is when they started facing strong competition from China and Korea.

They didn't decline, they simply didn't grow at the same ridiculous rate as countries that started out worse off than they did. China and Korea got a lot more business from the West as wages were kept lower, which gave them a competitive edge.

Respectfully call bullshit on that claim.

Japan couldn't come up with the new ideas to develop the latest automation that allowed Chinese and Korean factories to produce newest technology at mass scale. Japan tried in many areas to compete (OLED, DRAM, Smart phones, TV's, etc.) and they simply couldn't compete on the infrastructure and supply chains required to have mass production, which is a precursor to lower cost.

The labor cost is a non-factor as Korea and China uses cheap labor in Vietnam/India/Mexico/etc and Japan could do the same but they couldn't build factories with such automation.

That said, even for products produced in Korea, the costs of goods are still cheaper due to highly automated factory lines that employ the least amount of people.

Japan were leaders in the 80's and 90's due to their superior manufacturing capabilities but they rested on their robotics patents that made them successful back then while others keep pushing things further until they surpassed Japan in manufacturing.

Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda are better than American cars, even though the US has wrecked the economy.

Even as an American, I can truthfully state that is a low target. If you can get 4 wheels and a motor together the odds are they will be better than your typical american union workers quality.

Unions in the US are great but they are also shit, especially the auto union.

they sort of miss a few goals
they are not top level quality, thats often european or american, they are not china level cheap and traditional japan level of quality can be made in korea a bit cheaper. so either up the quality or lower the price. thoose products you named hasnt really changed over the years but more people can afford top end products and internet made the dirt cheap chinese products available for the rest. so who would buy a yamaha hifi system today?

who cares? honestly. a woman on a night out is an artificial fucktoy built around a human female core, any and all modifications to the underlying substrate are acceptable so long as they improve the experience.

Robotics is a huge field, with many niches that are only tangentially related. There's very little in common between mass producing small light quad UAVs and building bespoke planetary rovers for space missions.

for what it's worth, all the fundamentally new shit always gets developed at ETH, EPFL, MIT or the California unis. then it's a question of who manages to get it ready for an actual product and sell it .

plastic surgery doesn't mean installing plastic prostheses. Plastic in this context refers to the fact that the form of the body is being reshaped, it comes from the Greek word plastikos which means formed or molded.
