the united states is single greatest state in the history of mankind by sheer wealth and power, it has the the longest standing constitution of any nation as of now. It built on the ideas of inalienable rights and democratic institutions at a time when most of the planet was composed of royals and peasants and for almost 3 centuries it has only strengthened it's commitment to these values.

Post ww2 the top was taxed a lot more than they are now because it was needed for all the policies passed by FDR during the war, and the generous troop supports such as the GI bill, and government housing initiatives. This made things like housing much cheaper and gave birth to a fairly long period that people recognize as the American golden age.
