not meaningfully distinct from english (globally understood to be british) culture enough to be genuinely conisdered its own nation
there are no culture shocks when you travel from england to wales except maybe one different ingredient in an english breakfast
copes about the welsh language are just that - the 'english' language pre norman conquest saw the same treatment, literally every region of every country could find a point in history to call back to to claim unqiue nationhood if they wanted to

newport is considered by welsh and english alike to be a shithole which has plummeted downhill in the last ~20 years (after having plummeted downhill in the 20 years prior to that due to de-industrialisation)
plus once you scale down population to the size of newport, you'll find dozens of towns in england that are far nicer - ie it doesn't make sense to compare newport to cities 10+ times larger

i'm sure your holiday was nice, south wales in general has lovely coastlines & beautiful accessible countryside, but if you're visiting then base yourself in swansea or cardiff for an objectively better experience.
Sure, avoid london or spend only a couple of days there to see the main sights & museums if you care about that, and you're right about Edinburgh, maybe the most beautiful city in the uk, but why tf you're a die hard newport defender I don't get

the point is every country has distinctions within it, one part of that country to start saying that their distinctions are more important than everyone elses is retarded (effectively saying that everyone elses distinctions are insignificant, since they group 'english' together without a problem)
if you're unsatisfied with being grouped with the english, why do you only stop after one division, why is 'welsh' a sufficiently coherent identity to be an entire nation
split wales into north and south, they're clearly different culturally it only takes visiting them to see that

wales has a different history, ethnicity, culture, language, government, and identity.
welsh people identify their nationality as welsh overwhelmingly because of these reasons. That's where the buck stops
