If australians are so cool how come they vote for the same two parties despite using the alternative voting system?

our voting system works by

so if anything that's why the big parties are always so dominant.
I would also say that every party, aside from the hard right parties are all different so even if we didn't have this preferential voting system I don't think it'll end up with a significantly different result.
