Is learning a language that isn’t commonly spoken in your country a waste of time

If you intend to actually use it (either online or in person) then it's not a waste of time.

A language is only useful if its speakers are monolingual.

>Chinese people are monolingual -> Chinese is useful
>Japanese people are monolingual -> Japanese is useful

Languages whose speakers are bilingual are useless.

The more monolingual speakers a language has, the more useful it is.
