Curious if there's an evolutionary explanation: maybe in early human societies, women who preferred powerful or dominant men (even if ruthless) had a better chance of passing on their genes. That kind of preference might linger today in subtler ways

Answering my own question. I suppose criminal justice in recent human history reduced the prevalence of violent tendencies in men, but not necessarily the lingering social or psychological preferences in some women for dominant or dangerous partners
