Yes, they do, and they prey on pest insects like mosquitos and caterpillars. Pretty much any flying insect is a pollinator for some specie of plant. Wasps don't make honey, though, and they prey on invasive honey bees so the honeyniggers have been running a smear campaign against wasps for years.

Well at least with bees you know that if they sting you they'll die. Wasps will sting you multiple times and be perfectly fine. Generally bees shouldn't be bothering people unless you disturb their nest. Maybe there is a bee species in that part of the world that is more aggressive though that I don't know about.
