Ironically, I feel like these kinds of decisions are only going to erode the faith people have in the justice system and make people adopt stances against liberal democracy. In theory judges are indirectly legitimized by democracy (TM) but in practice they're very isolated from the average person and it feels like the divide is ever increasing. And yeah, we shouldn't go back to lynch mob justice, but terms like Rechtsstaat/rule of law ring very hollow when the impression you get is increasingly that they have some naive belief that every criminal is just some impulsive victim of their circumstances that can be reformed, rather than that there are simply deeply evil people who need to be locked up and in this particular case need to gtfo of germany.

If one person advocates to let murderers and rapists off with a slap on the hand and the other advocates to lock them up for decades I think most people would happily go with the latter. So either the powers that be need to drop the whole "democracy" charade and just openly state that they think of us as retarded tax cattle that needs to be ruled over by a small elite or they need to ask themselves if maybe punitive justice is sometimes necessary to uphold faith in the justice system as a whole.
