That's just the US where you're special. James Baldwin noticed it when he left America and travelled around Europe. In some places they didn't care that he was walking alongside a white woman in public whereas in the US people would stare or worse.
He talked a bit about it a short film about his travels to a Swiss village. Although he was still a stranger/an outsider (supposedly the first black man to ever come to the village), he was greeted with amazement and not hatred.
