the US is one of the best countries in the world if you want to live in a rural area without being a farmer so it kind of does matter

Your surroundings absolutely matter for your quality of life and trying to convince yourself otherwise is a downright dangerous cope. There's a reason I'm paying $1000 more every month to live in the nice part of my city instead of the area with the highest poverty and violent crime in my county. There's a reason I live near civilization and near my family instead of a town of 200 people with an average age of 60 in bumfuck nowhere Kansas. You own actions and thoughts are very important, but they can only get you so far.
