We don't, managing to get the Italian citizenship is comically hard if you're a non EU immigrant. There's cases of blacks and Asians people who lived and worked here in Italy since forever, learned the language (most speak it better than the average neapolitan) and integrated perfectly, but still can't obtain citizenship because of some dumb burocratic rule. A Chinese friend of mine who was born here from chink parents, studied here, and even graduated in a top university in Milan had to wait for her 18th birthday for her citizenship.

The truth is there were far more reasonable ways of doing it that would solve the issue brought up and still keep it a good deal for those who really wanted it. Proving it was just an excuse and not done in good faith. They were able to do it this way because Italians don't care much about the matter one way or another

Now I gotta move to Italy and live there for 10 years to get citizenship through the normal process. Which would be fine since I want to move to Italy and live in Italy, not Miami or Germany, and I don't care about it being a dying country with little job oportunities because that's not the point or something to worry about for me personally. But not having your heritage acknowledged still sucks especially when it would have helped tremendously

I'm sorry because you sound like one of those people that really wants to come here and wants to gets their citizenship because they really care about it, not as a shortcut for something else. Sadly people like you were probably less than 5% of all the people who asked for their documents.

I don't want to pass the idea that the Italian govt ended the easy citizenship for South Americans out of spite or because we hate you guys or something. It's because taking care of all these applications means a LOT of paperwork and money, and all these hours and hours of work and all these resources were spent for people who ultimately never set foot here.
Also, all these Italians abroad receive news, they receive electoral letters when there's an election, they can come to Italy and get basically free Healthcare when they need it, it's a big cost for the State when every year the number of applications rise in the tens of thousands.
