here we push fresh air into the living/sleeping areas and draw nasty air out from the kitchen, bathroom, hallway or simmilar areas. its not recycled but there is a heat exchanger between thoose two air ducts so not much energy is lost. you can have the ac/heat pump installed there but most choose a split and due to the heat exhanger it will reach the individual rooms anyway.
our system takes up far less room than yours, the loft and basement on our houses are liveable spaces, on yours its just ac, furnace and air ducts.

all new houses and many old have balanced ventilation, meaning it draws out as much air as it pushes in, they can have ac buildt into it, they all have atleast heat buildt into it.
a split ac unit is not part of that system it draws in room air and spits it back out into the same room, but that room air is ventilated through the central system and that air temperature is through the heat exhanger transfered over through the fresh outside air distributed all over the house. filtration here is to prevent outside dust or pollen to get inside, not to get kitchen bacon smell in the bedroom. two wastly different things.
