if you made lada as available as ak, it would still be a shite car. it gets you there you want but a dude in a volvo or merc is more likely to get you there.
at the time ak was relevant, europe focused on 7,62 with actual penetration and good accuracy, full auto rifles mostly shot in semi auto and high precision. you could always flip the lever if needed for full auto.. same caliber as group machine gun.
east was 7,62 mild calibre, poor penetration, meh accuracy and relied more on spraying. still used today and still as meh.
usa went 5,56 because their soldiers cant handle recoil and that lost them the vietnam war. with g3 they would have won.

its a good early rifle developed as the solution to the problem where everybody needed WAY more smgs during ww2, so they made an smg that shot something a little more powerful and had a longer range than a pistol bullet, and could be made as cheap as any stamped smg
with a bunch of aks you dont need to issue soldiers different kinds of guns (soldiers with marksman rifles, soldiers with smgs, logistics soldiers that need a lightweight gun, tankers)
it was the single most well rounded gun of its time and the west wound up doing the same thing by making their infantry rifle smaller and adapting the m4
