Very different histories

Japan was one of the first asian country to westernize. Since the 19th century, the west was a source of inspiration, and it is important to their identity that the west must remain a source of inspiration. If the west turned out to suck, they would be ashamed of ever having so heavily inspired from it

For China, the west was a colonizing force that tried to destroy their empire. They suffered what they call the century of humiliation. They're bitter and do not see westerners as a source of inspiration, even though they're quite frankly just as westernized as the japs by now. They do not hold the west in high regard and doesn't wish it the best
