He (The real dude who died 2,000 years ago not the one from the fairytale) probably thought God was gonna come save him before he died and then usher in a messianic age. This didnt happen obviously. You can tell this is what he thought because even the Bibble quotes him as saying "father why have you forsaken me?" As if he couldnt believe that Yahweh would really let his "son" die horribly on the cross. Poor sod, oh well at least he got a weird death cult out of it.
