I disagree, there's a tendency to social conformity which isn't the same thing. With every major political divide in Europe the British ended up not really picking a side and deciding on a lukewarm compromise eg Anglicanism and constitutional monarchy. Even with the Normans we just ended up with a compromise of a language instead of forcing it one way or the other.
