As a non-American I think that the more you are exposed to this 200 year old cringe larp over a failed 4 year long insurgency the more convinced you become of the fact that Grant was way too lenient during Reconstruction.

They should have listened to Thaddeus Stevens and the other Radical Republicans, publicly executed the entire confederate leadership, eradicated all vestiges of the Confederavy and expropriatd all the slave owners in order to distribute the land among the freedmen and women.

There are not many conflicts in human history that can be characterized as purely being good vs. evil, as the righteous vs the vile but when men take up arms out of their full volition to defend the hideous blot that is the institution of human bondage then its not possible for any decent man gift them any shred of tolerance, they deserve the utter defeat for they aren't only a threat to one particular faction but for all of humanity.
Davis and Stephens deserved to be publicly hanged on the steps of the capitol for the Cornerstone speech alone where they should have erected a monument dedicated to their execution for all future congressmen walking up the steps to see whenever they are about to enter the building as a reminder.
