In the 1970's, Japanese people used to litter everywhere. Even on trains. But they've learned to be civil, and now, their trains are clean, and people don't throw trash on them.

But it's 2025 and western trains are full of garbage.

Why is that?

You can read this novel, where it was common to throw trash out the window of trains.

This is a guide telling passengers to not throw trash out trains, from the 1960's.

Japan started being clean 40+ years ago when they hit their economic boom.

The west had already hit their economic boom, but we still have litter everywhere.

That was 我慢, and it was practiced up until the 90's. It came from "being tough no matter what", but of course, it had no basis in science and it would kill people. Sports science advanced, and you don't need to overtrain or hurt yourself any more.

Constant cleaning barring late night, very high density of trash cans. Very good signage. It's not some magic Nipponian technique. They just put a TON of money into upkeep and maintainence.

We have trash cans at every station and even outside of stations, same with the US subs I've rode on before. Still trash everywhere.

japanese are universally regarded as white people even though they aren't white and they don't care about being white which fills jeets and mudslimes with immense hate and jealousy because being treated as a white person is their ultimate dream

Oh and for the west we basically cut public transport budgets on the larger and municipal level. It's the Death Spiral so to speak. Japan and Korea still put (relatively) heavy investment because a drop in the QoS in their trains+busing would be catastrophic for keeping trust.
