All Eastern European countries are very poor and anyone trying to tell your otherwise is massively coping
The biggest difference is that both Romania and Bulgaria have those Balkan shithole qualities, like Romanian railway routinely runs trains with broken windows that has been like that for years or don't even bother to remove the graffiti, they look like this. There are stray dogs and giant rural poverty. From this standpoint Hungary is more "wealthy"
But overall speaking all these countries are extremely poor you should not fall for the /int/ psyop

Romania's supposed wealth is now being exposed as an overblown scam, it was all just based on debt and inflation, now their government has to desperately implement harsh austerity measures, raising taxes and freezing salaries in the public administration or they'll go bankrupt.

They really did all that muscleflexing show just to present themselves as better than Hungary at least for one year straight even if it comes at such a price to get your economy ruined in the long term. Such a Balkan thing to do. And we were seriously thinking about letting them into V4, lol

He is still right. When people talking about becoming wealthy there are two things, macroeconomic indicators and infrastructure. Romania has the worst, literally junk tier credit rating in EU, very low (Italy tier) employment, rapidly increasing debt (not overall but the rate of chance in the past decade), overheated economy with public sector increases.
As far infrastructure the only thing that Romania seems to be doing right is the metro expansion in Bucharest (if we ignore the architectural style that is awful)
There are highways you guys have been building for almost 20 years at this point and we are not talking about the mountainous ones with complicated terrain. You do not utilize the EU gibs well either. EU gave you money to replace some railway bridge over some river for a lot of money but you did not even bother to change any other part of the infrastructure so you now have 120 year old rails probably laid down by the Hungarian Kingdom before WW1 with 20km/h speed restriction (if there is any service at all) going to that shiny new expensive bridge. What was even the point? I've been to Cluj recently, there are supposed to be train works around that area but it looked exactly the same as last time I saw it.
You are fucked in Romania if you don't have a car because you don't have any equivalent of like the Volán network here that operates 6k buses that in smaller cities or in-between cities and between the cities and the suburbs/agglomeration. There are many QoL differences like that that make Romania a pain in the ass overall even compared to Hungary.

I normally don't comment on economy but I honestly don't understand where this
>Romania is becoming wealthy
thing comes from
>inb4 b-but Hungary
Yeah but no one pretends the economy here is doing well

Also another funny thing is that Romania keeps buying up all the old Deutsche Bahn fleet (which we should be buying but "somehow" it never succeeds) but you don't actually buy any spare parks, service or anything at all so you just run it for a bit until there are cracks on the windows. The funniest thing is you don't even bother with re-painting or anything so there is still the DB logo in front of the train with the local Deutsche Bahn maps inside and everything is in German lol. You guys are going to create the largest German heritage train fleet because you always buy everything just can't use it

Romania can have higher GDP per capita than Hungary per 2-3 years but it won't make up for literally centuries of the economic and civilizational advantage Hungary has always had over Romania

Hungary simply feels like a proper European country, even if it's not perfect, but Romania feels just like a regular Balkan/Eastern European backwater on par with Serbia or Ukraine. I dare say that the visual difference when you cross the border from Hungary to Romania is bigger than when you do that from Austria to Hungary.

quality of life got much better since they joined EU, as ridiculously as this sounds. In the 90s and early 00s the life was horrible - lots of people went abroad (mainly in western countries) to seek a better life and never looked back. Now the salaries there are mostly good and people can finally aford to stay at home and make babies instead of thinking how to make ends meet.

if you have X births divided by Y people your birth rate will be higher than if you have X births divided by Y+1 people, that's why if your government says you have Y people (so your birth rate is higher) while in fact you have Y+1 people, then it means your government undercounted the number of people in your country, because Y < Y+1

That is just a certified Eastern European classic. Retards in the government acting irresponsibly in an already overheated economy. Some economist already made a term for this like 15 years ago called "fiscal alcoholism"
I dont follow the Romanian economics, especially the politics so I have no idea how you managed to mess up so badly and create such a giant deficit when Romania still has access to EU funds, you are energy independent and your currency is a lot more stable than here. It takes actual talent to overdo the fuckups of the government here

I understand everyone did this during covid but romania keeps running humongous deficits to this day.
Maybe they think 50% debt/gdp is too low and they have room to run wild for now, but this is just a recipe for becoming greece tier.
The other disadvantage is that they miss out on the ECB dosh, the bond repurchase programme and all other gimmicks the central bank does to keep yields low even for fiscal retards like greece and france. Romania's monetary policy has to be more grounded to reality and thus their 10Y yield is 7% as opposed to 3.5% that it wouldve been if they had the euro.
