It was incredibly hard to work in the fields under the flaming sun.

Almost everyone who works outside in summer puts on an essential item called 空調服 (Kūchōfuku) to deal with the deadly heatwaves.
In a word, 空調服 is something like air-cooled clothing equipped with battery-powered fans (pic related).

That's interesting. Here in the states, we normally opt for very lightweight fabrics in the summertime like linen to help with the heat, and also provide more breathability.
I've never seen that sort of techwear before, but I know Japan is much more fashion-conscious than we in America are.
I will try to commit 空調服 to my memory bank.
