This is the Roman division of the Iberian peninsula. Your pic related could have happened if Galicia kept control of Portugal and Leon was annexed by Galicia instead of Castile.

Some french guy decided to settle in Iberia to fight the Moors one day in the 11th century and the rest is history. Crazy to think that if he just went through to Jerusalem the Portuguese would be just another minor ethnic group in Spain.

It very nearly did. Iberia looked like this in the 15th century and there was a war over whether Castile would merge with Portugal or Aragon
