The laws change a lot depending on what state your in.

Just a guess on the percentages but:
90% of states you can kill in self defense, but only if there is no way to avoid or get away from someone attacking you
60% have castle doctrine - you can kill to protect your home and property, but you may need to warn the thief to leave first, usually can't chase if they say they are leaving, etc
40% have Stand You Ground - if someone is threatening or starting a fight with you, it is THEIR responsibility to find a way out of it. You can kill even if it was possible for you to leave
