I was there as a teen going to the premiers. I watch the first movie three times in the first week.
Second movie two times in the first month.
Third movie also two times in a month.
The theaters were packed full. Every mall had huge LoTR theme ads everywhere.
The toy stores were packed with movie themed toys. Every kid at school had the ring necklace.
Even my dad who isn't a huge movie guy went and watched them with mom. And he bought them on DVD.
Probably the largest events in Swedish cinema history, not even the marvel crap came close.

also old fag here, i actually read the books before the first movie, read them when i heard the movies were coming out, so the movies didn't have as much effect on me as say seeing it fresh without foreknowledge because i was comparing my head version to the films
yes they were quite the phenomenon and had a fling with the fantasy genre and started reading other fantasy like wheel of time and soiaf ofc but some magic was lost for me
