It's a disgusting element of human psychology that people like "their own" strongman. Mongols are PROUD of Ghengis Khan, because He's Their Guy. Italians take a certain PRIDE in the ancient Roman history (which was depraved and evil at its core, although it also produced interesting art/literature). Russians have a certain "Stockholm" nostalgia for Stalinism, and so forth. I myself am not immune to this (I voted for Trump), but I am at least aware of the hypocrisy/dissonance.
