Russia has the single most wasted potential out of any country. They had everything, breathtaking architecture, technology, science and history. The nature alone is absolutely unbelievable. And all they do with it is steal budgets, trash everything and fight their neighbours

They were on the right track with Peter's reforms. He wanted westernization, connection to western trade/culture, and a full service navy. This is what Russia needed to get to the next level and become a world power. The subsequent leaders failed and let it regress.

For a post commie country, it could be way way way worse. Most post Soviet republics are worse.

Who's fared worse? Russia actually did remarkably badly considering places like Poland, the Baltics, Czechia and all that and their big rebounds. If Russia proper gets compared to Belarus and Central Asian shitholes this isn't a good look for them.
