Our relations would probably be something closer to what Serbia and Bulgaria have today

the Croatians are still ottomanized to a degree, more than the Slovenes. With them it's more a 'we're western-oriented politically and you're eastern' sort of situation, with the cultural concerns being more fodder to further stoke up antagonism than actual glaring differences.

They would be the same nation but that's because the Serbian Empire would annex everything from Triglav to Solun and serbify everyone. And since Dusan's state was the most developed and advanced entity in the region, everyone would associate serbianness with progress and wealth so would happily adopt Serbian identity willingly. Well, Croat identity would have never emerged in first place, most likely, after all Croats were invented by the Austrian military staff in collaboration with Vatican (that's what you can read in several informative publications of Dr. Vojislav Seselj)

That goes without saying

Croatia is naturally not so pro-west or anti-Russia much like Slovenia. The only reason we're leaning slightly more west is because of Serbs, not a direct Russian threat. Our own Mr. Milanović is quite pro-Russian himself.
I used to think our sabor sometimes behaves embarrassingly or how Mr. Milanović talking like a funny populist retard on camera was bad but then I saw footage from Serbian politicians and how they behave, that's another cultural low compared to Croatia. It's like they put all the illiterate village retards into one building and dressed them up in suits. They can't even go 10 minutes on TV without dropping a long jeboteee, I mean we curse but it would cause a decent outcry and an apology from the political party if a politician did something like that, Mr. Milanović is an exception, no one minds him dropping one curse each year because he initially built his persona as a clown.
But OP said if there were no Ottomans, which implies both Serbs and Croats probably being more civilized and no Serbs living in Northern Bosnia or Central Croatia causing ethnic tensions. So outside of potential minor disputes around Dubrovnik and a theoretical border somewhere along Bosnia we wouldn't mind each other all that much.

>i know a fair bit of Croatian land was under ottoman occupation but wasn't most of it very sparsely populated
As Ottoman rule came the original Croats left those lands and it was resettled by people from the southern parts of the balkans (Serbs, Vlachs etc) but, of course, precisely those parts saw fighting in the 90s so today they are the most depopulated parts of the country.
>i thought they were more magyarized
The most magyarized are rural parts north of Zagreb that were never under Ottoman rule and some eastern parts that were for some time but they saw a lot more immigration from the south so the Hungarian influence was diluted.

Just for reference, Lika, Kvarner, Gorski kotar, the parts of Croatia Proper that were in the personal union with Hungary just as long as North Croatia, have basically no Hungarian influence besides some fairly recent Hungarian buildings in Rijeka.

it's quite distinct in architecture though, Hungarian-style villages are very clearly noticeable in central Croatia (small houses just by the road, with almost no frontyard).

>Slavonia
Pretty big area but generally what I said for the eastern parts >>213136713. The area around Osijek and Baranja is more magyarized because it was actually part of Hungary and not Croatia during the personal union. Slavonia is flat like Hungary so the street plants and buildings look exactly like rural Hungary.
>Varaždin
Again, everything north also has Hungarian influence and even in their dialects you'll sometimes find words like "jezer" which means "one thousand" and not "lake" like in Standard Croatian. They're a bit more hilly and closer to the German lands so the Slavs got a bit more Germanized while in Slavonia there were actual German settlers which were expelled in recent centuries which means that now with mostly just Slavs it's less Germanized than the north.
