it was always possible through the treasury department website to donate to reduce debt or just donate to the US government, this isn't new, they're just adding new methods to make it more accessible

I once lurked on the US government sites (out of curiosity, glowies, don't fret) and saw on their treasury or finance site, a portal towards donating money directly.

This exited before the Paypal and Venmo implementation.
