The American existence is fucking miserable. If I want to get groceries I have to get in my car and drive to the store, then drive back home. When it's time to go to work I have to get in my car and drive to the office in rush hour traffic, and then when it's time to go home I have to sit in rush hour traffic again. Even if I want to go for a walk in the park I have to drive to the park, walk, then get back in my car and drive home. It's pointless.

When I was in college I did a semester abroad in Hungary and the difference in quality of life just from being able to walk around freely was the best part. I could step outside and walk aimlessly through the streets in any direction for hours. No destination, just walking for as long as I felt like it. You can hardly do that in America. The only reason to walk is to go from point A to point B, usually on a sidewalk directly next to 2-6 lanes of traffic. 99% of the time you're walking in a straight line where you can see for a quarter mile or more in front of you, and simply crossing the street can take upwards of 5 minutes depending on the level of traffic. Dozens of cars drive by and you have to stop yourself from thinking about how they all must think you're a freak because you're the only one on the sidewalk since no one goes for walks in the US. This place fucking sucks.

The worst part about driving in America is that somehow the concept of a walkable city has been turned into a culture war talking point with the right and left each taking their own stances and never conceding anything to the opposition because we're all brainwashed little goyim instructed to fight each other by our Israeli masters.

My point is that it's a meaningless argument that shouldn't even be a part of the American culture war to begin with. It's not going to fix anything. All American infrastructure is built around cars and now there's no going back.
Pro-walkable city people can't accept that you would have to practically demolish the core of any American city to make it truly walkable, and anti-Walkable city people refuse to admit that the car centric landscape America has created has a negative impact on the human psyche and quality of living. It's the textbook American brain disease of treating whichever side of the argument you agree with as the de facto truth.
If you're an American and you wish to live in a walkable city, the best and only solution is to leave America and move to one of the thousands of European cities that have existed since before cars were invented. That's significantly easier than petitioning your local government to put in a single bike 400 foot long bike lane on one street downtown that will ultimately be used for parking.

Except what was once a lush meadow 20 years ago is now a parking lot paved over with 3 feet of cement and tar. You could try to dig through all of that just to plant a single tree, or you could walk a mile away to where the land is still meadow and plant as many trees as you want over there.

The problem is American zoning laws literally wonโ€™t allow walkability, itโ€™s a huge infringement on property rights.

Thatโ€™s the dumbest thing I ever read. Making our cities walkable means doing the opposite. Just build over the parking lots, itโ€™s super easy.

American cities were built normally then people in the 60s literally demolished the city to make room for cars. Now weโ€™re in a massive housing shortage.

Literally every American city used to have its own rail line that connected the tiny villages on the outskirts to the downtown. Even the shitty village of 3k people I grew up in once had a rail line that ran through the town to metropolitan downtown that's 30 minutes away today by car. Then Mr. Goyberg and friends decided everyone needed to buy a new car every 10 years, ripped up all the rail lines and built highways and thruways instead.
