Not him, but Thai cuisine or rather, Pattani cuisine is the standard sit down restaurant dinner in Malaysia. Even "Chinese" and "Indian" restaurants will serve tomyam here. This is analogous to "Mexican" food in the USA.

Thai is popular because the Thai government sponsors Thai restaurants around the globe and even trains thai restaurant owners how to better cook Thai foods. Its literally their strategy for soft power.

I love both but would eat viet over thai if I had to choose one.

Most don't know this but the majority of Thailands best known dishes are actually from Laos. Laos heavily influenced that region.
