If you choose 3 then the person who sits down next is forced to sit directly beside someone.
If you choose 2 or 4 then they will be able to sit without being directly next to someone.

Depending on the distance, bag on top rack or chest and 7 (standing to the side of the doors)

I forgot that in some countries there is no possibility of any seats being left empty. My thinking was more that if you take 3, it leaves leg room and bag space for everyone.

I don't like to sit in the train or bus, I work seated. I need some time of the day standing up. Also standing it's better to see women cleavage from above and the general scenery. I only seat when I am carrying something or am eating something.
And yes eating in public transportation is normal in my country and I think there's nothing wrong with that as long as you don't make a mess
