It's all downstream from 08. That was the beginning of the decline and basically every government did nothing but manage the decline and often made things worse. Now on top of that you have immigration ethnic tensions hitting critical mass, leading not only to issues with the immigrants themselves but politics shifting into insane extremist ideologies that if they ever come to fruition will almost certainly lead to making things even more miserable on top of everyone just in general being poorer, and also stuff like AI threatening jobs. I think this is unironically the grimmest things have looked since the great depression.
