I recall a podcast with a former NVA who talked very specifically about how astounded he was seeing Soviet officers literally punching and beating their conscripts. Never would have been allowed in the NVA.

The Soviets were very much not in favour of the improved East-West German relations which Honecker's pivot and Brandt's 1970s Ostpolitik fostered. For years they outright banned Honecker from visiting West Germany, even though he was born there and planned visits, because they worried what it would lead to. They preferred East Germany to be fearful of West Germany.
Who claimed they were "patriots" in the sense you seem to think? They were patriots of their own state. Again, separate German states still exist. You don't have to be an irredentist to be patriotic.

Stalin was ok with German reunification early on if German was to be turned into a neutral state which was sabotaged by the West. Western scholars usually try to deny this or lie about it by saying Stalin never 'meant it' yet he kept his word in every respect when it came to Austria when they could have just kept it divided like Germany since the Soviet controlled half the country. Funny isn't it.

They never would have allowed a truly independent state of the size, location and importance of Germany. Austria was (is) comparatively irrelevant.
