Exactly. Why learn them if you already know one? Asia, Brazil, South America are whole new worlds. Europe is the same in many respects, same content as Americans. People know San Francisco or West Virginia but nothing aboutUtrecht or Apulia. When it comes to emigration, Germany and the Scandinavian countries in Europe are probably the best. Spain or Portugal for a digital nomad.

Does shadowing even work? I thought it's a known phenomenon if you speak/sing along an audio with a slight delay, you'll just say nonsense. Even if it doesn't sound like it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_auditory_feedback#Effects_in_people_who_do_not_stutter
It's the principle of speech jammer. While not exactly shadowing, there's a lot of resemblance.

Imo it's the same when learning handwriting or drawing. You don't just trace the shapes. You copy them to the right of the model letter.
[a] a a a a
In language learning, you repeat what your language teacher says, and he will listen for mistakes.

You should compare the model audio to your shadowing. But that's more troublesome and probably can't be called shadowing any more.

Some sentences are obviously translated way too literally.

I made the mistake of overthinking my language choice, rationalizing, and considering a dreamy vs. practical approach instead of following the flow. I started learning Portuguese / Spanish and Japanese earlier, and it was going well, but I had to ruin it by reading things like how book translations into Portuguese are worse than into French and Spanish, or that Japanese takes a lot of time, or that French is useless, that there is no anki deck for Portuguese, German doesn't sounds that good and Germans are obnoxious, Spain has high unemployment, Italy is flooded by immigrants etc. and now language learning is ruined for me.

It's still the best overall Slavic language to learn if you want to know one but don't know which one specific, yes, mostly due to its scale.
A good rule of thumb is that the closer one is culturally and geographically to the axis defined by 15th century Burgundy (so called Blue Banana now), the closer to the core of European culture, wealth, art etc. The further away from this core, the more scale matters

Well if you have any interest in business, government, or translation, the size of a market is not as important as whether it is expanding and whether such demand for speakers is being met. With Spanish for example, there is so many bilingual people that it’s a much less specialized thing to learn.

Relative to Japanese, interest in Korean seems to be expanding IMO. Plus Korean businesses are investing more and more overseas, including into America. So Korean may actually be a better investment for work than Japanese if you’re just trying to get an amount that gets you taken seriously in a meeting/job interview. If there’s 1000 jobs for self taught japanese speakers but 1200 applicants its not a better field than the 100 jobs for Korean speakers with 80 applicants.

Also in terms of diplomacy and military, the US government has much more involvement in Korea and Korean learning resources made by FSI and DLI are more abundant for a reason.

Would it be reasonable to take from this then that if one was aiming for polylingualism in either Germanic or Romance that Danish or Romanian would actually be the most powerful gateway in terms of comprehension?

I think what’s cool about the guys that actually manage to do that is the idea that you only really need rigorous study for the first one and can sort of just CI much of the others due to high starting comprehension, so i’m fascinated by the idea of it. It’s why Interlingua fascinates me as a tool for aiding polyliteracy in particular.

LATAM means that Sp/Po are S tier on paper but in actuality kind of shitty because the nations that speak the language are shit for both travel and business.

If every country had El Salvador style criminal justice for the past 50 years, LATAM would probably have ended up much more developed. As it is, learning Spanish in the USA is basically relevant if you want to work with mostly poor immigrants like being a court translator for illegal immigrants with DUIs or whatever, or you work in international agriculture.

It’s a prestige thing. Cajun is highly divergent, the speakers are rare, and they can all speak English. Louisiana French is soul. Lots of us do French in high school. I did. Not that many can actually speak it. It’s prestige has declined somewhat over time though as French itself has become less important for international business and diplomacy.

A great example of this is that, strictly speaking, the only Spanish that is really useful on a job site for example is rudimentary enough in terms of grammar that a lot of White guys just pick up some Spanish working construction anyways to communicate with Latino laborers underneath them. All the actual paperwork and stuff that you would need formal ability for and an education is in English anyways. Where I live in California we literally say “I speak job-site Spanish.” Beyond that, the Mexicans/Central Americans aren’t going to respect you more for having some halting Iberian Spanish you learned in some prep school.

French has by far better literature and is at least somewhat useful career-wise (I'm not sure whether such Swiss-maxxing won't look suspicious to my first employer in Germany though, I mean you see both French and fucking Alemannish in the language list in the application and you just know this dude isn't going to stay in your fucking Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), but I'm unironically concerned that a lot of n-words speak it (yes exactly just like in that roach's meme) who I'm pretty sure contaminate any French-speaking Internet space with themselves being ugly retarded gorillas.
Spanish on the other hand is much less useful, but it's a more authentic Romance language and it's spoken not by n-words but by a cute race of Yakut-Arab hapas. It seems I'd like to visit Latin America but a lot of evidence and reviews claim it's actually a full blown shithole so I'm not sure whether it worths it. Still, at least the people with whom I'll interact in it online will be cool hapas and not n-words.

It's not really that great though, because you need either French for the humanities-related stuff or German (both standard and the dialect) for everything else. More people speak Italian than French (both in single digits) in the big German Swiss cities, and the lingua franca is English and not French.

Yeah I've had the same problem of bothering with meta-lingusitic babble instead of just sitting down and actually learning a language. Most likely you just have ADHD, consult a doctor unironically.
Then, try starting a routine: change your phone and PC's interface language to German, lower your Anki limit to 10-15 new cards to be sure it isn't overwhelming, choose a single day to put everything aside and concentrate on reading your textbooks. Also reduce the use of English, including posting on the imageboards (unironically хyйлo helped me a lot with that because I can't post here anymore without wasting half an hour to deliver each post).

for media, it depends on what you care about. there are only several real places that have serious media: anglo countries, japan, italy, france. et cetera.

Spain is indeed a better country than France, South America is a huge pro unlike the Maghreb and the Congo, peninsular Castilian sounds way more exotic than French, it has twice the number of speakers, and I seemingly won't really need any French in Switzerland (even Basel is entirely German-speaking) even though the idea of full Swiss-maxxing looks appealing. Of course I'm not starting anything new until my German is actually ideal anyway, but am I wrong in anything?

I've decided to pick a Romance language exactly because those aren't new for me at all, I know English (which is 1/3 French and 1/3 Latin) and I've had enough exposure to Latin proper so I recognize a lot of words straight ahead. I just didn't know whether I really need one and now I've gotten a reason: I want to put "language learning" as a hobby in my job application and fluent French or Spanish in addition to fluent Russian, English, German, and Alemannic would be just enough to honestly claim it.
Thank you regardless, I'll check the thread tomorrow on whether anybody has a different opinion on that French vs. Spanish thing.

The inflections just got whittled down in all its descendants, particularly in English. The Romance and Germanic languages mostly lost their case systems except for German. Germanic languages have a lot less verb inflection as well.

Spanish grammar is difficult, but everything else about it is 'as easy as it gets' for an English native. Literally just 5 vowel sounds. Very simple and logical pronunciation. Almost the exact same alphabet we use in English. Hot Latinas to keep you motivated. Vocabulary shares many words with English. Sentence structure is pretty close to English.

You could reach fluency in Spanish multiple times before you could even order at a restaurant in Japanese.

Even a native would have some trouble. That's not today's Spanish, you know that?

I don't think you should expect lyrics in Spanish, it's a game about religion, if anything there'll be some lyrics in Latin rather than Spanish. Anyway I gave the first game's OST a listen and could feel the influence, here's some similar music.

1. English,
2. French or German,
3. Japanese,
4. Maybe, maybe easier version of French or German like Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish
That's all. Now I have to decide between German and French. French offers more prestige, but German is more practical in Poland and I'll have more opportunities to use the language.

I learned hiragana and katakana by following along with these videos, practicing writing each character, and making mnemonics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p9Il_j0zjc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6DKRgtVLGA

Then I signed up to the free JapanesePod101 beginner course and did it for a few months before my free trial ran out. I tried learning how to write each kanji I learned but eventually realized it was a waste of time and stopped. Then I started doing the Anki Core 2k/6k deck. I would also randomly watch the videos by Japanese Ammo with Misa or Kaname Naito whenever I'm bored a have a few minutes to get grammar points in my head.

Here's a useful guide worth skimming through.
https://djtguide.neocities.org/guide

As everyone else always says, Tae Kim's grammar guide is also worth skimming through.
https://www.guidetojapanese.org/grammar_guide.pdf

I started to feel like I was making the most progress when I started watching CardCaptor Sakura with Japanese subs and made my own Anki deck for sentence mining. I think this was around a year after I started studying Japanese and I could only understand like 20% of what was being said but enjoyed it. I recommend trying to mine 2-5 cards per episode on average so you expand your vocabulary but aren't constantly pausing. The only money I spent was on the first volume of the Pokemon manga which I occasionally read. I then started sentence mining a short free kusoge called Oniguisama and mined like 30 words from it. This was like 1.5 - 2 years ago and I'm now mining てにおはfeat真美. after the guy below recommended playing nukige for immersion.

https://archive.is/y4jyO

Overall, the learning methods that I felt like helped me the most were the Anki core 2k/6k and then immersion + sentence mining to make my own deck.

Yeah the difference is that I do it effortlessly and every word I speak is inherently “natural” usage, while you forever play a game of imitation.

You can whip out some archaic vocabulary or make midwit grammar corrections over typos, but a lotta English speakers can do that too. The thing is that when someone corrects “me and John” to “John and I” they don’t come off as intelligent, they come off as pretentious and affected, because everyone already knows “John and I” is the “correct” phrasing, it just sounds stupid.

I'd like to learn Spanish, but it's completely useless here, and I wouldn't have anyone to speak with.

Every language except English and German, maaaybe French, is useless here. There are some niche jobs with Dutch or Japanese or Danish or Czech but these are niches. So you'll probably find a job with Spanish, too, if that's what you want. And it's a fairly popular language, especially among women, and in big cities, there are some small Spanish-speaking minorities I think

French people are awful. French learners are awful.
I only learnt it so I can make fun of the French better.

>Every language except English and German
In terms of jobs, yeah, but I haven't met a single German in Poland who couldn't speak English. Unless you live near the German border, there's no opportunity to speak German here.
>maaaybe French,
There aren't any French speakers in Poland. There might be some in the big cities, but they probably speak English or Polish.
>it's a fairly popular language, especially among women
A good reason not to learn it...

NGMI. If you're so utilitarian might as well learn the language of the neighboring country.
