>>213469118Exactly. Why learn them if you already know one? Asia, Brazil, South America are whole new worlds. Europe is the same in many respects, same content as Americans. People know San Francisco or West Virginia but nothing aboutUtrecht or Apulia. When it comes to emigration, Germany and the Scandinavian countries in Europe are probably the best. Spain or Portugal for a digital nomad.

>>213473318Does shadowing even work? I thought it's a known phenomenon if you speak/sing along an audio with a slight delay, you'll just say nonsense. Even if it doesn't sound like it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_auditory_feedback#Effects_in_people_who_do_not_stutter
It's the principle of speech jammer. While not exactly shadowing, there's a lot of resemblance.
Imo it's the same when learning handwriting or drawing. You don't just trace the shapes. You copy them to the right of the model letter.
[a] a a a a
In language learning, you repeat what your language teacher says, and he will listen for mistakes.
You should compare the model audio to your shadowing. But that's more troublesome and probably can't be called shadowing any more.

I made the mistake of overthinking my language choice, rationalizing, and considering a dreamy vs. practical approach instead of following the flow. I started learning Portuguese / Spanish and Japanese earlier, and it was going well, but I had to ruin it by reading things like how book translations into Portuguese are worse than into French and Spanish, or that Japanese takes a lot of time, or that French is useless, that there is no anki deck for Portuguese, German doesn't sounds that good and Germans are obnoxious, Spain has high unemployment, Italy is flooded by immigrants etc. and now language learning is ruined for me.

>>213507455Well if you have any interest in business, government, or translation, the size of a market is not as important as whether it is expanding and whether such demand for speakers is being met. With Spanish for example, there is so many bilingual people that it’s a much less specialized thing to learn.
Relative to Japanese, interest in Korean seems to be expanding IMO. Plus Korean businesses are investing more and more overseas, including into America. So Korean may actually be a better investment for work than Japanese if you’re just trying to get an amount that gets you taken seriously in a meeting/job interview. If there’s 1000 jobs for self taught japanese speakers but 1200 applicants its not a better field than the 100 jobs for Korean speakers with 80 applicants.
Also in terms of diplomacy and military, the US government has much more involvement in Korea and Korean learning resources made by FSI and DLI are more abundant for a reason.
>>213510307Would it be reasonable to take from this then that if one was aiming for polylingualism in either Germanic or Romance that Danish or Romanian would actually be the most powerful gateway in terms of comprehension?
I think what’s cool about the guys that actually manage to do that is the idea that you only really need rigorous study for the first one and can sort of just CI much of the others due to high starting comprehension, so i’m fascinated by the idea of it. It’s why Interlingua fascinates me as a tool for aiding polyliteracy in particular.

A great example of this is that, strictly speaking, the only Spanish that is really useful on a job site for example is rudimentary enough in terms of grammar that a lot of White guys just pick up some Spanish working construction anyways to communicate with Latino laborers underneath them. All the actual paperwork and stuff that you would need formal ability for and an education is in English anyways. Yeah, I can't choose between French and Spanish too.
I'm sort of fluent in German now so I'm starting to learn Alemannish soon and I also want to learn a Romance language because it'll be easy, though actually useless, and I can put "language learning" in my job application's hobby list (holy shit, krauts are real fucking creeps, imagine asking to list your hobbies in a fucking job application, literal soulless biodrones).
French has by far better literature and is at least somewhat useful career-wise (I'm not sure whether such Swiss-maxxing won't look suspicious to my first employer in Germany though, I mean you see both French and fucking Alemannish in the language list in the application and you just know this dude isn't going to stay in your fucking Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), but I'm unironically concerned that a lot of n-words speak it (yes exactly just like in that roach's meme) who I'm pretty sure contaminate any French-speaking Internet space with themselves being ugly retarded gorillas.
Spanish on the other hand is much less useful, but it's a more authentic Romance language and it's spoken not by n-words but by a cute race of Yakut-Arab hapas. It seems I'd like to visit Latin America but a lot of evidence and reviews claim it's actually a full blown shithole so I'm not sure whether it worths it. Still, at least the people with whom I'll interact in it online will be cool hapas and not n-words.

Just fuck my shit up, I have no idea what these people are talking about. I have a whole inventory of shit I can't read. I heard that the game has "spanish music" and the like, but I'm not hearing very much of it that's decisively spanish - maybe spanish instrumentals but they don't tell you if you're listening to a folk melody or something while you're playing so why did people say that it's a good game to show you spanish music? It just sounds like typical dark souls music.

Then, try starting a routine: change your phone and PC's interface language to German, lower your Anki limit to 10-15 new cards to be sure it isn't overwhelming, choose a single day to put everything aside and concentrate on reading your textbooks. Also reduce the use of English, including posting on the imageboards (unironically хyйлo helped me a lot with that because I can't post here anymore without wasting half an hour to deliver each post).

for media, it depends on what you care about. there are only several real places that have serious media: anglo countries, japan, italy, france. et cetera.
T B H if you have to think about picking a foreign language like this, you're ruminating and will likely do nothing.
You know, I feel like I'm gonna pick Spanish in the end. Spain is indeed a better country than France, South America is a huge pro unlike the Maghreb and the Congo, peninsular Castilian sounds way more exotic than French, it has twice the number of speakers, and I seemingly won't really need any French in Switzerland (even Basel is entirely German-speaking) even though the idea of full Swiss-maxxing looks appealing. Why does there need to be sooooo many verb conjugations? Oh Spanish, I wish I could stab you right in the face. I should have picked one of the slant-eye languages. I hear they don't have any conjugations.
>>213522584why is English the only language that avoided conjugation/declension slop?

>>213522584They're really regular, except for ir and ser. Everything else follows a pattern. Half the language is just mastering these tenses.
Also, language acquisition is slow. You don't immediately internalize the grammar you read about even if you do memorize it. As you listen to hundreds of hours of Spanish this stuff will definitely stick.
>>213522736Proto-Indo-European: a highly inflected language with inflections for case, number, person, mood, and gender, with agreement between nound and adjectives. There used to be singular, dual, and plural (for three or more things).

I started to feel like I was making the most progress when I started watching CardCaptor Sakura with Japanese subs and made my own Anki deck for sentence mining. I think this was around a year after I started studying Japanese and I could only understand like 20% of what was being said but enjoyed it. I recommend trying to mine 2-5 cards per episode on average so you expand your vocabulary but aren't constantly pausing. The only money I spent was on the first volume of the Pokemon manga which I occasionally read. I then started sentence mining a short free kusoge called Oniguisama and mined like 30 words from it. This was like 1.5 - 2 years ago and I'm now mining てにおはfeat真美. after the guy below recommended playing nukige for immersion.
