What's truly bizarre is that, despite the fact that there are 660 million speakers of Southeast Asian languages (ASEAN languages), the number of people learning their languages on Duolingo is less than 10% of the number learning Korean.

Fundamentally, I define people who study Korean or Japanese as nerds or language freaks. These are languages with a limited number of speakers and are language isolates. Learning Korean or Japanese is only useful if you live in South Korea or Japan. Furthermore, both South Korea and Japan are among the most unfriendly countries in the world to foreigners. Ultimately, learning these languages doesn't offer much benefit. Korean and Japanese are only useful for hobbies.

Southeast Asians are pretty humble irl. They happily reciprocate even a brief greeting in their own language. Southeast Asians' English proficiency is often better than that of South Koreans or Japanese. In my view, South Koreans and Japanese are often treated with disproportionate favor by developing Asian countries, despite their laziness, rudeness, and distorted sense of superiority. Although I am South Korean, I have often seen tourists from South Korea and Japan being rude to locals in many developing Asian countries.
